Advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics Study of the Dissolved Oxygen Concentration within a Thin-Layer Cascade Reactor for Microalgae Cultivation

High concentration of dissolved oxygen within microalgae cultures reduces the performance corresponding cultivation system (MCS). The main aim this study is to provide a reliable computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based methodology enabling simulate two relevant phenomena governing distribution MCS: (i) mass transfer through liquid–air interface and (ii) evolution due photosynthesis including inhibition by same oxygen. On an open thin-layer cascade (TLC) reactor, benchmark numerical assess was conducted. While phenomenon embedded CFD code ANSYS Fluent, rate has be implemented via user-defined function (UDF). To validate our methodology, experimental data for 80 meter long reactor are compared against results. Moreover, consistency results with theoretical expectations been shown on newly derived differential equation describing balance along longitudinal direction TLC. We argue that employing any MCS can reliably determined in silico, eventually optimized or/and controlled.
